PUBLIC OPINION

BAD CONDITION ALLEGED.

VIEWS ON CURRENT TOPICS EGMONT COUNTY BY-ROADS.

(To the Editor.) Sir,—ln the next few days there will be a great influx of cars full of country shoppers to New Plymouth. . It has rained. The rain will help to advertise the state of the roads from which those cars have come. None, I am sure, will be able to eclipse the muddy display of the cars from the Egmont county byroads. The pot-holes and swimming pools on our road remind one of the days when the road user l expected to get out of his dray at intervals ttod throw a few logs across the worst places. Such a state of road, because of its unexpectedness at the- present time, is a serious menace, especially to strangers using the road at night. Constructive criticism is neither easy nor popular, but it serves a very* useful purpose. Mr. Sheat is alert and has his data correct He would have at once queried last month’s report regarding the work done on this road. Contrary to the report nothing waS done, unless one excepts part of a load of spoil from an adjacent road, which was scraped invto two holes near the top where it could be admired from the main road. The Egmont County Council keeps its main roads in excellent order, but its presnt policy of “Queen Anne front and Mary Ann back” is not acceptable to the ratepayer of the by-roads. There are six days left before Christmas. Perhaps the council will grant us a belated Santa Claus visit of its repair team. I hope so.—l am, etc., TIPOKA RAHOTU. Rahotu, Dec. 21.
