MANAIA SCHOOL
MEETING OF THE COMMITTEE. The monthly meeting of. the Manaia school committee was held on Wednesday night. Those present were Mr. O. T.. Parry (chairman), the Rev. R. Miller, Messrs. J. E. Crompton, P. H. Instone, H. Silby, V. Adlan} and G. Butler. The headmaster (Mr. J. Browning) reported that the primary and secondary rolls were respectively 213 and 42, the averages being 190.8 and 37. The school examinations were practically completed, the results being satisfactory. Sickness during the term had been so prevalent that exemption for this term under grading would be applied for. Mrs. King proposed to visit the school during 1936 to give first aid instruction. Swimming instruction was being given. The instructress of the cookery department (Miss M. Helyer) reported that pupilk had been occupied planning, preparing and serving summer menus. Special emphasis had been laid on the importance of vegetables and fruit in the summer dietary and the preparation and arranging of all kinds of salads had been very popular with the pupils of the primary schools. Practical examinations given during November showed a satisfactory grasp of the rules for health, based on correct and balanced mealplanning which had been taught throughout the year. The high school pupils had planned, prepared and served hot teas for winter, also teas suitable for hot weather, breakfasts for various types of workers, and the making of savouries for teas and suppers, together with a variety of suitable' cakes etc. A practical examination on the making of a gooseberry pie showed very satisfactory results. A letter was received from the Education Board slating that it had placed on record its commendation of the efforts of the Manaia school committee to further, the ends of practical education by the provision of materials and facilities for extension work. Permission was granted the secondary pupils to make another inspection of the Government experimental grass plots on Henwood Bros’ property, Oeo. It was decided that the committee give small cash prizes to those gaining first, second and third places in the calfjudging competitions. A vote of sympathy was expressed because of the illness of the caretaker (Mr. G. White, j»r.). Mr. J. Browing on behalf of the teaching staff expressed appreciation of the services the committee has rendered to the teachers and school during the year.
