THROAT SLASHED

SEVERE INJURIES TO WOMAN. CHARGE OF ATTEMPTED MURDER. i Hastings, Dec. 11. An elderly man, a retired farmer, of Raupare, whose mental condition has warranted his having an attendant for some time, and whose name was suppressed in the meantime, was charged before Mr. J. Miller, S.M., this morning with attempting to murder his wife at about nine o’clock last night by cutting her throat. The wife is now making satisfactory progress in hospital. The accused was remanded for a week for an alienist to investigate his mental con.dition. ■' > i Senior Sergeant MacNamara said that accused, aged nearly 70 years, attacked his wife with a table knife'and cut her throat while she was writing a letter. The attendant who lived with the accused and his wife was out of the room at the time. He heard screams and when he went into the room he saw the wife with a gash in her throat. The police and doctors were summoned.

The magistrate said the facts suggested that the accused was mentally unbalanced, which was found to be supported in a Supreme Court order relating to his property. ' After the alienist’s report was received and if the accused stood his trial, his name would be published. Till then it was right that it should be suppressed.
