SHOOTING SKILL

STRATFORD CADET’S PROWESS. COVETED MEMORIAL PRIZE WON. A pupil of the Stratford Technical High School and a member of the school cadet corps, Sergeant-Major B. CliffordJones, has brought to the school for the first time the William Robert Friar memorial prize for skill in shooting. Only three such prizes are awarded in New Zealand each year and CliffordJones has won that allotted to the Central Command. The story of the institution of the memorial dates back to 1908 when Lord Roberts inaugurated educat ion al journeys to England for Imperial cadets. The first from New Zealand was Sergeant W. Friar, Onehunga, who represented New Zealand at the Bisley rifle meeting and made an excellent performance. Lord Roberts gave him. a rifle. He was among the first New Zealand contingent to leave for the war and was killed in Flanders. A mernorial fund was established and from that prizes are provided. This year the prize is “Lord Roberts’ 41 years in India.”
