LIGHTNING STRIKES

EWES AND LAMBS KILLED. CANTERBURY THUNDERSTORM. By Telegraph—Press Association. . Ashburton, Last Night. Four ewes and four lambs were killed at Wheatstone during a thunderstorm in the coastal district yesterday. The animals, which were somewhat mutilated, did not have the appearance of being burnt. The ground for about 10 square yards was cut up as if pigs had been rooting. Hail accompanied the storm, some stones being as big as pigeons’ eggs, The toils of young oats were cut off and peas were threshed out. Fruit trees were stripped and gardens generally suffered. In other coastal areas fruit trees were stripped and crops flattened but not severely damaged.
