By Telegraph—Press Assn— CopyrightLondon, Nov, 23.
An Addis Ababa communique alleges that 200 starving and terror-stricken refugees, some women hugging dead babies to their breasts, staggered into Abyssinian camps in the north, declaring that the population of the Tigre province was suffering intensely owing to the Italians commandeering grain and cattle, assaulting girls, bombing villages and pursuing the inhabitants with machine-gun fire. Large numbers of women and children have died of starvation and the population of the territory is suffering such cruelties that they would flee but are immediately shot down if they attempt to cross the Italian lines, the message says. Unconfirmed reports state that the Abyssinians have recaptured Gorahai. This is considered improbable as it is understood that the Emperor Haile Selassie has instructed Ras Nasibu not to attack Gorahai but to let the Italians extend their line further northwards until a weak link in the chain appears, when the Ethiopians will launch a concerted attack. It is reported from Hafrar that Italian Somalis, objecting to always being used as the spearhead of the attacks, have mutinied and killed 30 Italians. \ '■ 11 ' REPLY HURTS ITALIANS UNCOMPROMISING STAND BOYCOTT OF LEAGUE ? London, Nov. 24. The uncompromising terms of the British reply to the Italian Note protesting against sanctions has hurt the Italians, says a message from Rome. The predominant feeling is that Britain is determined to slam the door which Italy, is so “painstakingly keeping open.” The claim that Britain is only fulfilling her Covenant duties is greeted with impatience. In that case, it is asked, why does she continue to allow Japan daily to nibble off bits of China? The fact that Italy is not sending delegates to Geneva to the oil tripartite conference or the committee to study the composition of the Council is interpreted as the Fascist Council’s decision to boycott the League while sanctions are enforced. The Ottobre (Rome) reports that has been subscribed for the internal 5 per cent, loan floated to pay for war expenses. Part of the subscription represents the conversion of other loans. A Naples message says that the first detachment of the Tevere Blackshirt division, composed of Italians returned from abroad, has sailed to reinforce General Graziani’s forces on the Ogaden front.
