DRAMA FESTIVAL
FIRST ATTEMPT AT OPUNAKE. SUCCESSFUL EVENING RESULTS. The first drama festival at Opunake ■was held in the town hall on Thursday night. Mrs. W. A. Laing, who has given a great deal of attention and time to creating interest in drama, was producer. It was a good beginning and created favourable comment by the audience. The first piece produced, “I’m Sorry, It’s Out,” was a library scene offering scope for a display of hidden talent in all characters. Those taking part were Mrs. L. Hall, Mrs. A. Clarke, Misses N. McNae, N. Perry, K. Julian, D. Wan and M. Taylor. The/ second play, “Woman’s Crowning Glory,’' was of a lighter vein and full of humour. The parts were taken by Miss Mavis Lyttle, Miss G. Geary, Mr. H. Johnson, Miss C. Darragh and Miss F. Crofskey. The third play, “Making it Pay,” was of a heavier type, and the characters were very well delineated by Miss K. Julian, Miss N. Perry, Miss N. McNae, Miss M. Lyttle, Miss G. Geary, Mrs. L. Hall and Miss F. Crofskey. The bill of fare was big for the first organised attempt by the women’s institute, and a very commendable result was attained by all those taking. part. Sports Activity.
A progressive pairs tournament was played on the Opunake bowling green on Wednesday, Sixteen players took part. Julian with four wins topped the skips and J. Judson with four wins headed the leads.
The Opunake Athletic Club held a successful initial dance during the week. The club has made a successful start, for the attendance at the opening field practice night was good. A large membership has been recorded and several trophies have been given. Mr. Jack Gep has been elected captain and the secretaries are Mr. Claude Clegg and Miss M. Mackenzie. They are supported by a keen committee. General and Personal.
The monthly meeting of the Opunake Girl Guide committee was held on Friday. Members present were Mesdames A. Mitchell (president) W. D. Richards, F. Sisley, F. Hammond, F. M. Taylor, W. A. Laing, C. Fraser, T. Armstrong, C. H. Marcroft and D. Ross (secretary). Subscriptions were received from Mesdames Mitchell and C. Fraser.
A euchre party and a dance promoted by the Hibernian lodge were held in St. Patrick's hall on Friday night. Euchre prizes were won by Mesdames C. Cameron and A. Gadsby, and Messrs. Thompson and P. O’Hanlow. Winners of competitions were John O’Rorke and Denis Bradley. Music for dancing was played by Mr. J. Hickey.
Mrs. McLean and Miss Sinclair returned on Wednesday evening from a holiday at Cambridge.
