THE RACING DESCRIBED

SEVERAL CLOSE FINISHES KAWAKAWA CUP A GREAT FINISH. CHANGE OF LUCK FOR WIGGINS. (By Telegraph.—Special to News.) Pukekohe, Last Night. Racing conditions were excellent for tire Bay of Islands Racing Club’s meeting at Pukekohe to-day and there was some line racing. Several of the finishes were extremely close and exciting. Some good win dividends were returned, die best being those of Huskie and Marjory Daw, who paid double figures. The latter is a full sister to Princess Doreen. Hurdles to Indolent. The each way favourite Greek Gold missed a place in the Hokianga Hurdles, which was decisively won by the second fancy Indolent, who was in front practically throughout. Dark Princess attempted to go with Indolent over the last few furlongs but he jumped away at the final fence, while Black Marlin came along to beat her for second. Lap Up was a very creditable fourth after being almost down at the first fence, where Orenda fell, and Folly’s Choice was polled up. Half Field Away Badly. About half the field got away badly in the Kaikone Maiden Handicap. Needful and Professional were smartest to begin and they were joined at the top by Diacquedoon, who ran up on the rails. Diacquedoon, Needful and Professional were together in the lead entering the straight from Little Artist, Lilbert and Red Flame. Little Artist finished very resolutely to win by a short head from Professional, with Lilbert on the outside anitner head away third. Vera Acre was a c’ose fourth, followed by Diacquedoon and Glenacre. Huskie Surprises.

An outsider in H'. skie brought off a surprise in the Northland Hack Handicap. Orefield and Solas made tire running to the home turn where they were closely attended by Huskie, Enlightenment, Valrent and Leo Colossus. Huskie had charge at the distance and won by a head from Valrent, who cut Enlightenment out of second cy a short head. Te Broney came from the rear to get fourth, ahead of Race Whip and Leo Colossus. Huskie recorded a nice performance but Valrent appeared a shade unlucky.

Master Norval in Fine Finish. The Kawakawa Cup provided a fine finish, Master Norval scoring a long overdue win and returning a nice price. Imamint made the running from Gay Broney and they were together in front at the home turn, with Miss Lu and Master Norval challenging on the outside. Master Norval finished best to win by a neck from Miss Lu, with Gay Broney a length and a-half away third. Imamint improved upon her Te Rapa form for fourth, and Prince Colossus, who faded only near the end, was fifth. Master Norval was last early but was handy a few furlongs from home and finished very resolutely. Marjory Daw’s Juvenile.

Another outsider in Marjory Daw was successful in the Maromaku Handicap. She reached the front quickly from Summary, Surella, Gay Streak and Gay Chief. Marjory Daw looked like winning comfortably at the distance but tired near the end and just lasted long enough to. win by a short heaa from Surella and Gay Chief, who dead -heated for second. Gay Talkie was fourei and Gay Streak fifth. Marjory Daw iis a full-sister to Princess Doreen and she was purchased cheaply at the National yearling sales by Mr. C. M. Merrylees, of Dannevirke, for whom she is trained by P. W. Scally. Gay Chief finished very fast on the outside and probably would have - won in another couple of strides.

End-to-end Win for King Tut. King Tut scored an end-to-end victory in the Ohaewai Hack Cup, for which Tidalia was a good favourite. Lady Zinnia attended King Tut until reaching the home turn, where Impellent, Teddy Boy and Te Broney were in a bunch ahead of Tidalia. King Tut stayed on solidly to score nicely by a length and a-half from Impellant, who defeated Lady Zinnia by a neck. Tidalia got badly placed early but was a close fourth. King Tut brought a change of luck for H. N. Wiggins, who had gone through seven days’ racing just previously without riding a winner.

Bellkyrian Too Speedy. The speedy Bellkyrian jumped out smartly to win the Pakaraka Hack Handicap all the way. Wahine Reihi and Queen Nona were her closest attendants throughout and they filled the places, Wahine Reihi staying on the better to be second. Ballymoney was fourth, followed by Gay Defence and Dancing Lady. Bellkyrian displayed much of her former brilliancy and her early, speed had most of the field in trouble.

Final Event to Crooning. The favourite Tray Bit made a fine effort to win the Russell Handicap, but he failed near the end and was beaten into third place. He did not jump out too cleanly but he soon ran to the front from Princess Star, Scotland and Crooning. Tray Bit showed the way into the straight to Scotland, Princess Star and Crooning. Once in line for the post Crooning challenged and she finished very strongly to win by a neck from Wait and See, who came very fast on the outside to beat Tray Bit by half a length. Scotland was fourth and Princess Star fifth. It was Crooning’s third successive win. Wait and See put in a great finishing rim from the rear. bR-£K. SILK SOX GALLOPS WELL SOLID SIX FURLONGS WORK AT NEW PLYMOUTH The tracks at New Plymouth were in excellent order for training operations at New Plymouth on Saturday morning, when most of the candidates with engagements at Feilding were galloped. All the fast work took place on the course proper with the flags well out. There was little between Script, Hinkey Pinkey and the Cleasanta gelding at the conclusion of half a mile in 54 2-ss. Silk Sox, who was brought from Urenui by motor trailer, hit out freely over six furlongs in Im. 20 l-ss. He appears to be in great order and was responsible for a smooth performance. Ngaterahiri just shaded Whoa Johnnie at the conclusion of half a mile in 555. Ngaterahiri moved well. Bonny Glow was allotted a good working gallop over six furlongs. The filly is looking well. There was little between Glenvane and Red Fox at the end of six furlongs in lm. 22 2-ss. However, there was not a great deal of pace on early and they came home strongly. Chikara, who is to race at Te Awamutu, was galloped six furlongs the reverse way in company with Courtega. The pair moved attractively to register lm. 21s, for the distance. Both appeared to handle the reverse going without any trouble.
