SECRET POLICY
i PATEA CANDIDATES DISAGREE. ; PLANKS OF LABOUR PLATFORM. 1 Whether the Labour Party has a secret ’ policy has been the subject of disagree- ■ ment between two Patea candidates, Dr. ! G J. Adams (Democrat) and Mr. W. G. I Simpson (Labour). At Patea on Friday > Dr. Adams declared that there was and endeavoured to prove it but the next day i Mr. Simpson again denied the charge . and contended the proof was not proof, s Dr. Adams said flat he had disre- • garded the challenge of Mr. Simpson, ; to the effect that if Dr. Adams could , prove the statements he made anent the s secret policy of the Labour Party Mr. Simpson would withdraw from the con- • test. However, he would accept the chal- , lenge. He read extracts from the na- , tional executive’s annual report adopted . at the Labour Party’s conference in April f ■ last. Mr. Simpson stated on Saturday that [ he understood Dr. Adams had quoted ' page seven of the report of the national J executive of the Labour Party in sub--5 stantiation of his allegations of a secret : policy of the Labour Party. Mr. Simpson said that he had declared that if Dr. Adams could prove his allegations he ’ would withdraw from the campaign. He failed to see, however, that anything ap- . pearing on page seven of the report • could be construed as proof. 5 No reference to the “abolition of the ' laws of inheritance,” “confiscation of in- • dustries” or “land nationalisation” was p contained in the report. Practically every newspaper in New Zealand had publish1 ed the whole of the policy endorsed by ’ the Labour conference. “Dr. Adams has not yet shown reason 1 why I should resign in the terms of my 3 challenge,” said Mr. Simpson.
