THREAT TO HAWAIIAN CITIES. . SWIFT MOVING FLOWS OF LAVA. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright Rec. 5.5 p.m. ' Hilo, Nov. 23. Moving at an unusual speed two streams of lava from Mokuaweoweo, on the slopes of Mauno Loa, the second largest active volcano in the world, advanced steadily on Hilo and Kona Coast today. The north-eastern stream at 3 p.m. was threatening Hilo, being only 25 miles from the city. It had moved 15 miles in less than 24 hours. A lava tide washing down the other slope toward Kona Coast had travelled an equal distance. The coastguard vessel Tiger was ordered to stand by for an emergency evacuation of the city and the villages along the coast of the island of Hawaii, the largest of the group. Flames shooting up from the lava flows were visible from 60 miles. The flows began with earth tremors and an explosion in Mokuaweoweo’s northern pit. Mauno Loa is a giant volcanic cone on the island of Hawaii.
