THE KING’S SORROW
DEATH OF EARL JELLICOE. FRENCH AND ITALIAN TRIBUTES. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright Rec. 5.5 p.m. . London, Nov. 23. The King and Queen yesterday sent a telegram of sympathy to Lady Jellicoe and a Court circular issue from Buckingham Palace contained the following notable tribute by the King to the memory of Earl Jellicoe: — “The King has learned with profound sorrow of the death of Admiral of the Fleet Earl Jellicoe, who will for all time be remembered as commander of the Grand Fleet during the long and critical period of the war. Th King knows that the loss of this great seaman will be deeply felt throughout the whole Empire, and not least by the people of New Zealand, the Royal Navy and ex-service-men, whose confidence and affection he quickly won by his devotion to their welfare.”
The Archbishop of Canterbury will take part in the funeral service on Monday at St. Paul’s Cathedral. The Prince of Wales will represent the King at the funeral. A Paris cable states that the French Fleet and naval bases have been ordered to fly ensigns half-mast for Earl Jellicoe’s funeral, an hc£. ijp? previously only paid to French admirals, the King of the Belgians, General Joffre and FieldMarshal Foch.
Tributes to Earl Jellicoe include Signor Mussolini’s sympathy with the Admiralty in the death of an illustrious admiral.
