A streamer bridge evening was held in the Windsor tea rooms on Friday to raise funds for the sports candidate. Among the prize-winners were Mrs. W. H. Simon, Mrs. W. Farquharson and Miss Joan Coleman. Dancing followed the bridge. Some of those present were Mesdames R. Tyrer, W. Farquharson, W. Simons, Misses A. and C. Uniacke, J. and H. Bremner, J. Coleman, O. Masters, R. Furrie, M. Malone, M. Whittle, M. Lyons, L. Penn, M. Porritt, B. Thomson, D. Mann, N. Cannon, and A. HardyJones. — The mad hatters’ ball held in the town hall last week in aid of the sports queen fund was 'Very well attended. A large share of the success was due to the efforts of the convener, Mrs. E. H. Young. Among those present were Mesdames E. H. Young, W. McKay, W. Liddell, B. Bellringer, Amess, D. McLean, Briscoe, L. Pope, R. Fryday Cook, N. H. Moss, Rowell, Misses G. Brown, V. Liddell, O. Cook, J. Elgar, A. and C. Uniacke, A. Hardy Jones, J. Macßae, E. Wilmshurst, N. Ennis, Z. and O. Thomson, McCluggage, P. Brown and B. Hale. INGLEWOOD Mrs. Bumip left during the week for Auckland, where she will spend a few weeks’ holiday. Miss M. Kivell, Stratford, is the- guest of Mrs. W. E. Kivell. Mrs. Edmonds has arrived from Dannevirke to take up her residence at Inglewood. Miss N. Simpson arrived from Marton on Saturday night and is the guest of Mrs. H. McAllum for the Joblin—McAllum wedding next Wednesday. Miss E. Good, who has been spending a holiday at Hawera, has returned to her home at Tariki. Mrs. N. T. Roch was a bridge hostess on Friday night. Miss Joan Feaver was a recent visitor 'to Wellington. On Saturday afternoon Miss Eileen Blundell, New Plymouth,, was hostess at a tea in honour of Miss Enid McAllum, whose marriage will take place next "Wednesday. Mrs. I. Grant returned at the weekend from Wellington, where she spent several days’ holiday. Mrs. D’arcy Cameron, New Plymouth, was the guest of her mother, Mrs.' G; R. O’Carroll, for. the week-end. Mrs. Archer has returned from Marton, where she has -been staying with relatives for some weeks. Miss K. Larmer was a recent visitor to .Hawera and Wanganui. Miss M. Longbottom motored to Wellington at the week-end. Miss C. M. Sinclair was a visitor to New Plymouth at the week-end.

WOMEN’S INSTITUTES Kaponga: Unsatisfactory ' ' weather somewhat affected the attendance at the monthly meeting. The president, Mrs. R. D. Dagg, presided. As . a celebration .in honour of the institute’s fourth- birthday it was. decided to hold a garden party at Mrs.' N. C. Davies’ residence, Eltham Road, in February. The president gave a brief resume of the half-yearly council meeting at Stratford. Cake icing and decorating was demonstrated by Mrs. Burrows. Competitions were won as follows: Plate of four cream puffs, Mrs. R. Webb I, Mrs. A. Betts 2, Mrs. J. Tyack 3; Christmas novelty costing not more than Is, Mrs. A. Betts 1, Mrs. N. C. Davies 2, Mrs. I. Evans 3. Much amusement was caused by a competition for drawing a pig using the left hand. Mrs. H. J. Blackwell was adjudged the winner by popular vote. Hostesses were Mesdames Webby and McCullough. Inglewood: A garden party which was to have been held at Mrs. T. Lindsay’s residence on Wednesday was postponed because of the weather, and instead the monthly meeting, followed by a social afternoon, was held, Mrs. Kaye presiding over a good attendance. Mrs. Lovell was appointed to the committee in place of Mrs. Jones, who has left the district. Mrs. A. Codd accepted the vacant position of second vice-president. New members elected were Mrs. Knofflock and Mrs. Watson. A donation towards the cost of heater to be installed in the women’s lounge of the New Plymouth hospital is to be forwarded. Mesdames A. Codd and N. Peters were thanked for embroidering the president’s tablecloth. Mrs. Codd, a delegate to the council meeting, read a report. The hostesses were Mesdames W. J. Smith, Lightfoot, Bungay, Laing and T. Lindsay. Games and competitions winners were-Mrs. Dobson, Mrs. Faris, Mrs. Lindsay, Mrs. L. Cramer, Miss Corney and Miss Trimble. A cake given by Mrs. Codd was won by Mrs. Lindsay. Those who gave trophies were Mesdames Kaye, Codd, Harwood and Miss Peterson. A bring and buy stall was presided over by Mrs. C. D. Lowden. Waitara: The branch held a successful garden- party on Wednesday in the grounds of Mrs. M. Jones’ residence. Numerous stalls did excellent business, and competitions were popular and interesting. The takings were about £lO, and the expenses very little. WOMEN’S DIVISION (hnata: A pleasant afternoon was spent on Thursday by members when they met at the home of Mrs. W. E. Donald, a vice-president. The secretary reported on the result of the recent euchre party. It was decided to make donations of £1 15s to the health campaign fund, £1 Is to the Plunket Society and a smaller donation, to the Halcombe fund. The afternoon was spent in community singing Miss Ruth Luxton playing the piano. Competitions caused much amusement, Miss K. Luxton winning a peg race Mrs. Leo Penwarden a word buildS competition and Mrs B. C. Kurth r>iir<:erv rhymes. Mrs. Donald was thanked for the use of her home and for Siring prizes- Mesdames Donald and R. Penwarden were hostesses.
