SOUTH TARANAKI TEAM

MATCH FOR GRAHAM CUP EVEN STRENGTH OF THE BATTING. TOWN v. COUNTRY GAME IN NORTH The South Taranaki team to play North Taranaki in the annual match for the Graham Cup at Hawera next Saturday was chosen by the selector (Mr. W. Dormer) after Saturday’s competition matches. The North Taranaki team will be chosen after the town v. country game on Wednesday. The South Taranaki selection is:— W, Dormer (Kaponga), captain. H. Barker (Hawera Old Boys). W. Barker (Hawera Old Boys). R. Barlow (Stratford). S. Betts (Kaponga). V. Betts (Kaponga). D. Buist (Hawera Old Boys). G. Court (Kaponga). L. E. Duke (Hawera Old Boys). Ross Eden (Manaia). A. C. Walker (Stratford). C. R. Sturrock (Hawera Old Boys), 12th man. H. Ellis (Patea), 13th man. Any player not available is to notify Mr. Donner or the secretary of the division, Mr. M. B. Shaw, Hawera. All competition matches in South Taranaki for next Saturday have been postponed. The feature of the South Taranaki team is the even strength of the batting right down to the last man, whoever that may be. While the bowling is not as strong, the team includes seven men who on their day can do a lot of damage. With H. Barker, Taranaki’s best cover, and Barlow, a fine slip, to give inspiration to a team mainly of young players, the fielding should be good. Dormer, H. W. Barker, and S. Betts, all regular members of Taranaki teams in the last few seasons, have shown good form this year. Barlow, whose performances nearly won the game against Manawatu last summer, is also at his best, but Ross Eden has not shown his real form so far. A pleasing selection is that of V. Betts, who can bat really well and at times is liable to tie any batsman up with his leg breaks. Court, another Kaponga batsman, is a dour fighter who is always hard to shift. South Taranaki enthusiasts hope that Duke, Hawera Old Boys’ stylish bat, will give a better display than he did at New Plymouth. Buist, who has been opening the batting for Old Boys recently, will be a valuable bowler. He bowls a good length medium pace action swerve. Walker played for Taranaki a few seasons ago and is a good all-rounder, adding to his batting and bowling ability alertness in the field.

Mr. H. J. Larkin has selected the following players to represent town:— H. P. Davison (New .Plymouth). N. Bowen (New Plymouth). V. Parkinson (Western Park). G. Ewart (Western Park). J A. Ewart (Western Park). 1 N. Grant (Western Park). J. Spedding (Western Park). 1 C. Lash (Old Boys). ] E. Christensen (Old Boys). ! M. Donnelly (High School). ! J. Broughton (High School). J L. Wallace (Old Boys) is 12th man. ■ The team consists mainly of young ’ players with a measure of experience included to give solidity. Every member of the team is capable of making runs and the bowlers chosen should give a balanced attack. In fielding, too, there are some outstanding 1 men. Some of the young batsmen, er- ’ ratic in performance, need only experi- ' ence and confidence to bring them to the fore. Many prominent players have not been included for various reasons, and this has given the younger players their chance. The Country team has been selected as follows: Stan. Giddy (Tarurutangi), Spence Giddy (Tarurutangi), E. Giddy (Tarurutangi), N. Giddy (Tarurutangi), O. Foreman (Tikorangi), P. Sarten (Tikorangi), J. Sarten (Tikorangi), B. Cole (Tikorangi), W. Sheard (Urenui), R. Wilson (Urenui), T. Longstaff (Brixton). I. Sheard (Urenui), and J. Sampson (Brixton) are reserves. Stan, Spence, Norman and Eric Giddy, ©. Foreman and P. G. Sarten will form the nucleus of a strong batting side which has little sign of a tail. The team is certainly not short of bowling talent. Eric and Spence Giddy, S. Cole, J. Sarten, R. Wilson and W. Sheard all have excellent performances to their credit both in the present season and in the past. Last season J. Sarten was the most successful against Town in the Mason Cup game, although Spence Giddy’s speed and accuracy proved a great asset. On the whole the team’s strength lies in the number of all rounders. Although the turf wicket and strange light at Pukekura Park may prove a handicap the team should give a good account of itself. Mr. G. N. Skelton has been appointed manager. The team is to assemble at the Melbourne Corner, New Plymouth, at 10.30 a.m.
