ALLEGED THREAT OF EJECTION.

INCIDENT AT HAWERA MEETING.

The Mayor of Hawera, Mr. J. E.'Campbell, and Mr. W. W.‘ Cousins crossed swords at the’ first of Mr. H. G. Dickie’s meetings at Hawera last night over an allegation by Mr. Cousins that he had been warned not to make a nuisance of himself if he did not wish to be ejected. At the conclusion of the address Mr. Cousins stood up and asked Mr. Campbell, who was chairman, if he could have “a few minutes with Mr. Dickie.” Mr. Campbell: You cannot have a few minutes but you can ask questions. Mr. Cousins’ then alleged that he had been given a note stating that if he made a nuisance of himself he would be put out. Mr. Campbell: Are you suggesting I sent that note?—Oh no, no.

Will you tell me who handed it to you?—No. lam not a “pimp.” Latei’ Mr. Cousins stood up again and asked if workers were to be allowed an hour off on full pay to vote. They had been told on the aerodrome job that they would not.

Mr. Dickie (to the chairman): Do you know if that is so.

Mr. Campbell told Mr. Dickie in an undertone that he did not.

Mr. Cousins suggested Mr, had told Mr. Dickie that the concession was being made but he apologised on the Mayor’s denial. When cautioned by Mr. Campbell for his allegation he pointed out that he had apologised.

Mr. Campbell: Well, do not make insinuations.

The incident closed when, after Mr. Cousins had asked another question, Mr. Dickie inquired if he were “on the unemployed.” Mr. Cousins: No. I am working for the Public Works Department now on the aerodrome!

Mr. Dickie intimated with reference to Mr. Cousins’ inquiry that he would ascertain the position from the Minister of Employment.
