NEW TYPE OF BUTTER BOX

HALF USUAL WHITE PINE USED. A new type of butter-box, in which the white pine content is reduced by half compared with the standard box by the use of pulp board, is on view in H. Lester’s shop, New Plymouth and at the office of Mr. E. Griffiths. The holders of the New Zealand manufacturing rights have obtained • the jnsent of the Dairy Board for a trial shipment of 5000 boxes of butter, using the new boxes. They are stated to be cheaper than the standard box and will have the effect s»f prolonging the life of supplies of white pine, which are diminishing it such a rate that it is estimated that the timber will have to be obtained from Llie South Island in a few years. In size the new box is similar to the standard box. The outer timbers, however, are • 3-16 in. ■ thick, compared with the 3-Bin. thickness of the standard box, The new type is collapsible, and is delivered flat. ’ The two ends slide into grooves, and the top is also fitted with a tenon joint to give a tight fl'. The box is wired. The chief feature is the inner lining of waxed pulp-board, which is as strong as the timber frame. This lining is in three pieces, and is so fitted inside the frame as to preclude the possibility of sawdust entering the box. Butter is put in in the ordinary way, in parchment paper.
