MANUTAHI NEWS

OPENING OF TENNIS SEASON. GOLF CLUB TO OPEN SHORTLY. Although recent rains have made the Manutahi tennis court rather heavy, an enjoyable afternoon was spent on Saturday when the season was officially opened. There was a good attendance. Mr. A. B. Muggeridge, who presided at a meeting of the Manutahi school committee last Monday, extended a hearty welcome on behalf of members to Mr. W. Coulter who has been appointed to fill a vacant seat on the committee. Others present were Messrs. H. Cornwall, G. Bills and R. Schwass (secretary). The head teacher, Mr. D. M. Jillett, reported that the roll had increased to 47 with an average attendance of 45.1. The grounds were generally in good order. Several matters requiring attention were detailed. The committee decided to ask Messrs. O’Neill Bros, to put all fences in good order and appointed Messrs. Muggeridge, Schwass and Cornwall a sub-committee to have the tennis court put in firstclass order. Messrs. Schwass and Jillett are to draw up a prize list and suggest arrangements for calf judging day on December 12. The appointment of a pet lamb judge was left to Mr. Muggeridge. It was reported that all back fees were paid, that dental clinic fees were coming in satisfactorily and that the school would be closed on election day. Appreciation of the assistance of Mr. W. A. O’Callagherhan in planning the course on Mr. L. R. Hamilton’s property was expressed at a meeting of the recently formed golf club on Tuesday. Thanks were accorded Mrs. Hamilton for an offer of assistance in carrying out preliminary work, Mr. George Anderson for the making of equipment and several club members who had undertaken definite duties. A woking bee was arranged and the purchase of- a mower and material for stiles authorised. It is hoped to commence play next week. There was a good attendance presided over by Mr. D. M. Jillett.
