ATHLETE HONOURED
FAREWELL TO MR. L. EDWARDS. GATHERING OF PATEA CLUBS. Representatives of Patea sporting clubs met at the Foresters’ Hall at Patea on Thursday to farewell Mr. L. Edwards, who will leave shortly for Wellington. The loss to Taranaki in Mr. Edwards’ departure was referred to by a number of speakers representing organisations with which he has been associated. The Mayor, Mr. F. Ramsbottom, expressed the general regret at the departure from Patea of so versatile an athlete. They regretted his loss to Patea but were pleased that it meant promotion. He would have opportunity of gaining more experience and Mr. Ramsbottom hoped that he would wear, the silver fern next season. He bad made a name for himself throughout New Zealand and his parents were justly proud of him. He was a pattern for the rest of the young men in the community. On the Patea Football Club’s behalf, the president, Mr. L. Hunt, hoped that Mr. Edwards would be playing with his old clubmate, Mr. D. Paterson. All footballers would watch his career with interest.
Mr. Alan Maxwell (Patea Surf Club), Mr. T. E. Roberts (Patea Tennis Club) and Mr. Gordon Fraser (Patea Athletic Club) endorsed the remarks of the previous speakers. The Mayor presented Mr. Edwards with a leather suitcase which he hoped would be used, some day, to carry an All Black jersey. Mr. Edwards said he would treasure their, gift and the memory of. their kindness.
The remainder of the. evening was spent in dancing, Mr. A. Maxwell being master of ceremonies.
