CEREMONY AT SCHOOL
KING’S PORTRAIT UNVEILED. A portrait of the King was unveiled in the assembly hall of the Patea school last week by Mr. E. F. Hemingway, chairman of the Wanganui Education Board. In addition to the scholars and staff many parents were present. After the singing of “God Defend New Zealand” the headmaster, Mr. C. P. Bates, explained that in commemoration of the King’s silver jubilee! the school was to receive a portrait of His Majesty the King. It would be unveiled by the chairman of the Wanganui Education Board, Mr. Hemingway. Mr. Hemingway said the presentation was the result of a happy thought of the old pupils. It would be gratifying to them to know that while other monarchs were 1 losing their thrones their own King was daily endearing himself more and more to his people. That was because the people were treated fairly, and it was well known that in no other country was a greater freedom enjoyed than under the British flag. Mr. Hemingway urged them to uphold their national ’ honour and to bear, in mind the motto of the Prince of Wales, “I serve.” The portrait was unveiled, the headmaster thanking Mr. Hemingway. The scholars recited Kipling’s “Pledge,” after which the National Anthem was sung.
