LARGER ROLL NEEDED

OHURA DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL. MONTHLY REPORT TO THE BOARD. Reporting to the Ohura District High School committee on the Wednesday evening, the headmaster, Mr. N. H. Tunnicliff, said that seven pupils were admitted and four withdrawn, leaving the roll at 163. The average attendance was affected by an outbreak of whooping cough and other ailments. The numbers in the secondary department were unchanged, but if the high school were to be retained, an increased roll would be necessary. Subject to their gaining proficiency certificates 12 new pupils had signified their intention of continuing their education next year, if all these promises were fulfilled the future of the high school was assured. The manual school was functioning smoothly, both woodwork and domestic science proving popular and interesting subjects. Acting on a suggestion put forth by Mr. C. N. Haslam, senior inspector, the teachers of the district held a meeting and decided to combine to.put on a festival of song and folk dancing on December 13. The idea was to show parents some of the work being done in the schools. The chief difficulty was to provide transport but it was thought that tljis could be arranged. The; gardens had been completely replanted, continued the report. The newlyplanted flower-beds were looking exceedingly well until they received a battering during the recent stormy weather.. Mr. H. Cameron presented a young kauri tree to the school. This was apparently doing well in the native tree section of the garden. When the school nurse visited the school recently she deplored the fact that no dental treatment had been carried out since her last visit. An effort should be made now to obtain a promise from the Health Department that as soon as a dental nurse was available the district had first claim on her services.

Mr. C. Friel presided at the meeting. Others present were Messrs. K. Alexander, E. T. Wiltshire, J. Potter, E. Stuart and J. M. McClenaghan (secretary).
