METALLING URGENTLY WANTED. FARMERS’ UNION MEETING. The question of metalling. Valley Road, discussed by the union at a previous meeting, was opened again ■ at the monthly meeting of the North <‘i Taranaki provincial executive of the Farmers’ Union yesterday when Messrs, Radford and McKenzie, in advocating metalling of the road, stated in a letter that 21 families were affected by the road. The annual production figures of the locality included 150,000. to 200,0001 b of butter-fat, 300 bales of wool, 4000 sheep and 000 head of cattle. The Waitomo County Council advised that the settlers as far as Mr. M. C. Pratt’s property had agreed to contribute towards the cost, nut settlers on the upp' - portion of the road had not done so. It was therefore, practically impossible to obtain - grants without the settlers contributing towards tl ■ cost. It was decided that the secretary should 1 make further application to the Minister and the county council for the metalling of the road. :-.“.7 '• ’ The question of freight on wool was. being taken up with the Railway Department, according to a reply from head office. ■ x An agreement with manufacturers of superphosphate, according to the Minister of Agriculture, provided that the selling price must not exceed £4 a ton ex-works in the North z Island and £4 5s at fixed prices in the South Island. The Dominion secretary, Mr. A. P. O’Shea, advised that in regard to -the shortage of farm labour, the provinces themselves should get in touch with the nearest certifying officer. The Prime Minister’s office, replying to the resolution forwarded by the .executive, stated that the terms of. the resolu* tion had been noted and the points raised in support of them would receive full consideration.
