WHEAT IN TARANAKI
CROPPING ON COASTAL BELT. (By “Tainui.”) It is estimated that there will again be an area of about 250 acres in wheat in the coastal district between Okato and Rahotu this-year. Messrs. K. A. and L. H. Andrews of Okato have between them an area of nearly 200 acres, the majority of which lias already been sown and is making a splendid strike. Major appears to be the most popular variety of wheat though a few acres of Jumbuck variety have also been sown. Some good crops were harvested last year, one of the largest growers averaging over 40, bushels to the acre. The land appears to be standing up well to wheat, which it is generally recognised takes a lot out of the ground. Crops have, however, been successfully taken for five years in succession off the same piece of land and in one or two cases for six or seven years. Wheat growers along the coast generally use from two to three cwt of superphosphate to the acre, as it has been found that fertiliser is most suitable for- wheat.
