HIS MISTAKE.

A parrot escaped from its cage and settled on the roof of a country cottage.

A farm labourer, who had never before seen such a bird, fetched a ladder and climbed to the roof to capture the handsome prize. As he neared the parrot the bird spoke. “Hi, what d’you want?" it said.

The labourer almost fell off the ladder in surprise, then, recovering himself, he raised his hat and said awkwardly: “I—l beg your pardon, sir. I thought you were a bird."
