WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

Ngaere: The monthly meeting was conducted by the -junior members. Miss Bonner presided and Miss Newlove acted as secretary. A competition was won by Mrs. Attrill. The points competition for a set of coat hanger and shoe trees was won by Miss Coleman, with Mrs. Arthur second and Miss Penniall and Mrs. Attrill equal third. A competition for pansies resulted: Mrs. Arthur 1, Mrs. Bonner 2, Miss Penniall 3. Mrs. Watkins presented the delegates' report on the federation meeting, which was supplemented by Miss Bonner. A demonstration on the making of trays with Chinese matting was given by Mrs. Smith, Eltham. Mrs. Smith also explained the use of felt hats in the making of rugs, cushions and shopping bags. The hostesses were the junior members.

Mangatoki: Mrs. Mahon presided over a Large attendance at the monthly meet-, ing. It was decided to hold a “bring and buy” stall at next meeting. Mesdames Morgan and Mahon were appointed to meet the school committee to arrange the Christmas tree. A sample of the institute calendar was on display. Mrs. Mahon presented a report on the recent half-yearly meeting at Stratford, where she was presented with a posy from the Taranaki federation. The potato-growing competition for the greatest average weight among institutes with over 40 members was won by Mangatoki. The evening stall-holders were Mrs. S. G. Morgan and Miss E. Beech. A demonstration of pastry making was given by Mrs. A. A. Piper, Lowgarth, who was thanked. A competition for an embroidered d’oyley judged by Mesdames A. A. Piper and H. Linn was won by Miss V. Beech, the second award going to Miss G. Beech. A good selection of work was entered. The next toy-making will take place at the home of Mrs. H. Linn. The hostesses were Mesdames J. L. Taylor, M. Sheerin and J. Townend. Okaiawa: Mrs. G. Good presided over the monthly meeting. A fair number were present, and three new members were enrolled. The hostesses were Misses M. Lindsay, R- Evetts and C. Hackett. An interesting address on the culture of roses was given by .Mr. C. Goodson, Hawera. A competition on “body building” was won by Mrs. Warnock and that for the best parcel, the contents of which was not to cost moie than 6d, was won by Mrs. Hollis, Mrs. Good second and Miss Flora Sutherland 3. A vote of sympathy was passed with the relatives of the late Mr. H. Cameron.
