Miss Austen, who has been spending a week or two with friends at Hawera, left last week-end to spend a day or two at Wanganui before her return to Hawke’s Bay. Mrs. L. B. Lewis will leave Hawera at the end of the month to reside at Hastings. Miss Joyce Powdrell had a few friends to tea on Tuesday afternoon. Miss Jocelyn Lennon has returned from Wellington. Mrs. Purser, Wellington, is spending a few weeks with her daughter, Mrs. A. J. Corrigan. After visiting Wellington for the Marsden old girls’ reunion Misses Mickey Hawken and Miss C. Fraser returned during the week, Miss Fraser going to New Plymouth on Thursday evening. Miss M. Vincent has returned from Waverley to her home at Manaia. Mrs. A. J, Corrigan spent a few days at Wellington last week. , Miss Dorothy A. Corrigan left yesterday to spend a week or two at New Plymouth. Mrs. J. S. Young, accompanied by Mrs. A. M. Young, left for Wellington on Thursday to meet Miss B. Young, who is returning from a nine months’ holiday tour overseas. After spending a few days there they expect to return early next week. Miss Spence left yesterday for Dunedin to take up training as a Plunket nurse. Afternoon Teas and Talk. Sweet pea blooms and azaleas shed their fragrance in Miss Gladys White’s sitting room on Saturday when several guests were welcomed to tea. The hostess chose a floral frock in deep brown and rose tonings, and Mesdames Welsh, L. R. Hamilton (Manutahi), C. Bayley, L. Symes, A. Grierson (Auckland), L. J. Bull, W. O'Callaghan, C. J. Tawken and Misses A. Symes and B. Watty were among those present. Wearing a floral patterned crepe fleurita afternoon frock in deep rose shades, Mrs. W. O. Williams entertained at tea on Wednesday afternoon. Mesdames W. M. Thomson, W. F. Buist, L. J. Bull, A. Coleman, Symes, Grierson (Auckland!, C. Bayley, Fogg, and Miss A. Symes were the guests present. Fragrantissima and pink pearl rhododendrons in large jardinieres and vases of roses were the decorations in the drawing room when Mrs. S. C. ■ Tonks was hostess at tea on Thursday afternoon. The hostess wore a and. white figured crepe de soie gown anc. at tea she was assisted by her daughter,. Miss Cushla Tonks, who was frocked in a deep wine .toned finely woven woollen frock. Those present included Mesdames W. Hamilton, Symes, R. H. Leece, W. O. Williams, A. Coleman, W. M. Thomson, L. J. Bull, H. D. Caplen and Misses A. Symes and E. Caplen. Other hostesses at tea during the week were Mesdames W. M. Egglestone and G. M. Mann. Bridge Party. Mrs. L. B. : Lewis -won the highest score when Mrs. W. Jobson entertained at bridge on 'Wednesday night. The hostess wore a commander blue floral gown and her daughter-in-law, Mrs. Max Jobson, Pdkekohe, who is, staying with her, wore a bright tri-col ured novelty patterned fergsyl romaine. Others present included Mesdames J. Cairney, Jobson, Lewis, J. W. Ogle, W. Syme and Misses Huggins and Mac Diarmid. Farewell Evening. On Monday evening the lounge of the Nurses’ Home was gay with large bowls of rose-toned azaleas and paler shaded azalea mollis when Sister Spence, night sister for the past two and a-half years, was the guest of honour. Bridge was played, and after supper the matron, Miss J. Fraser, paying tribute to Miss Spence’s good qualities, her popularity with patients and staff, and the service given during her stay at Hawera, presented her on behalf of the nursing staff with a handbag. Sister Spence, who is to leave to take up Plunket training at Dunedin, returned thanks, expressing her sorrow at leaving.
