MRS. WADDELL WINS

NGAMOTU WOMEN’S GOLF FINAL.

MRS. CURTIS’ GAME FIGHT.

Playing wonderfully consistent golf under trying conditions, Mrs. Waddell won the women’s championship of the New Plymouth Golf Club . yesterday afternoon, defeating Mrs. Curtis 3 and 1 after a well-contested game. A strong, cold southerly gale made conditions difficult but throughout Mrs. Waddell was always steady, hitting her long shots truly and well. She was two down after playing seven holes, but then won five in a row to establish a lead which gave her victory. Mrs. Curtis played well at the start but her game slumped badly in the middle stages and, though she rallied bravely after playing the 12th, Mrs. Waddell was too steady to allow Mrs. Curtis to make up the leeway. Neither found the green with their seconds at the first, but Mrs. Curtis hit the pin with her approach and took the hole with a four. A perfect five into the wind enabled Mrs. Waddell to square the game again at the next. Both putted unsuccessfully for fours at the 3rd, which was halved in fives. Mrs. Curtis with a fine chip took the 4th with a five to be one up again. Mrs. Waddell placed a grand third four feet from the flag at the next, but missed the putt, enabling Mrs. Curtis to snatch a half.

Neither found the green from th tee at The Dell and Mrs. Curtis looked likely to win the hole when her opponent duffed her chip, but Mrs. Waddell rose to the occasion by sinking a 12ft. putt for the half. A weak tee shot found her in trouble al the 7th, where Mrs. Curtis with a finely played five took the hole to stand 2 up. She was well on the next in three, but a weak approach putt cost her the hole. She pulled her tee shot badly at the Sth, where Mrs. Waddell with a sound three squared the game. Commencing the inward half Mrs. Curtis put her tee shot in the ditch and her second out of bounds, enabling Mrs. Waddell to win the hole with an ordinary seven. Mrs. Waddell was in difficulties from the tee at the 11th, but recovered splendidly and sank a 6-feet putt for a five and a win to stand two up. She increased this to three when Mrs. Curtis pushed her tee shot out and ran through into the bunker with her second at the next. Mrs. Waddell missed the green with her second at the 13th, where Mrs. Curtis, making no errors, won a hole back with a fine four. Both players lipped the hole for twos at Moses, which was halved .in threes. Mrs. Curtis, looked likely at the next, where she was on the edge of the green with her second and her opponent in the bunker on tire left of the green. However, she was short with her approach and Mrs. Waddell, staging a great recovery, won the hole with a four to become dormy. When Mrs.. Waddell placed a good third well on the 16th green the game looked over, but Mrs. Curtis with a brilliant shot laid her ball only two feet from the flag to win the hole with a splendid four. The end came at the next, where Mrs. Curtis was short with her chip and Mrs. Waddell, making no errors, took the hole and the game. Mrs. C. M. Hill was referee. NGAMOTU WOMEN’S PLAY.
