DEATH OF MRS. JANE LUXTON. The funeral of the late Mrs. Jane Luxton, aged 74 years, who died at Hawera on Tuesday, took place yesterday at the Hawera cemetery, there being a representative following of relatives and sympathisers. In the absence of the Rev. A. G. Irvine the Rev. K. J. Watson, Normanby, performed the burial service. Pall-bearers were Messrs. George and John Preece, Harold Finlay, Joyce, P. Henry and W. Cran. Many wreaths were deposited at the graveside. Mrs. Luxton, who was the widow of Mr. Charles James Luxton, who predeceased her in January, 1919, is survived by a family of eight children, 30 grandchildren and five great-grandchild-ren. Her five sons are Messrs. T. D. Luxton (Taihape), C. J. Luxton and A. J. Luxton (Waitoa, Waikato), L. W. Luxton (Whakatane) and N. G. Luxton (Matapu)., There are three daughters, Mrs. F. B. Maunder (Whakatane), Mrs. J. Caldwell (Auroa) and Mrs. L. Preece (Matapu). Twin sons, Messrs. W. and R. Luxton, predeceased their mother. Born at Castlederg, Ulster, Ireland, Mrs. Luxton came to New Zealand as a child and settled with her parents in Canterbury. In 1880 she was married to a son of one of Canterbury’s earliest pioneers. Mr. and Mrs. Luxton and family moved from Canterbury to Taranaki in 1902 and settled in the Matapu district, later retiring to live at Hawera. Mrs. Luxton had a wide circle of friends and was beloved by all who knew her. PERSONAL ITEMS. Mr. W. James, formerly sub-editor on the Hawera Star, has been appointed cable sub-editor on the Poverty Bay Herald. Pleasure that Mr. H. G. Dickie, M.P., the National Government candidate for the Patea electorate, was sufficiently recovered from his illness to resume his election campaign was expressed by Mr. R. J. Watt on behalf of Kakaramea electors at a meeting on Wednesday night. GENERAL ITEMS. Single Men’s Camps. The abolition of single men’s camps in the summer was favoured by Mr. H. G. Dickie, M.P., in reply to a question at Kakaramea on Wednesday night. There was enough work for the men on farms, he said. Government’s Tax Reductions. A defence of the Government’s tax reductions at election time was made by Mr. H. G. Dickie, M.P., at Kakaramea on Wednesday night. It - had been possible because of a credit balance created by the sale of gold at a. profit. Restoration had been promised and made and that it should occur in election year was only a coincidence. Support of Toe H. The Hawera group of Toe H has signified its intention of supporting the health stamp campaign in connection with house-to-house canvassing. Mr. L. O. Hooker, organiser, addressed the group last night on the aims of the appeal and the measures being adopted to assure the success of the campaign. Patea Razor Blades. The possibility of a company being formed to exploit Patea ironsand was mentioned by Mr. H. G. Dickie, M.P., at Kakaramea on Tuesday night. When in England he had bought razor blades made from Patea ironsand. Impromptu Speeches. A social evening held by the Mt. Egmont Alpine Club at . Hawera last night took the form of an impromptu speech competition. The efforts of some of the speakers created a considerable amount of amusement. The winner was Mr. C. Dingle, the judge being Miss D. Clement. >■ Prevention of Fire. An address on fire prevention was given to members of the Patea Womens Institute last week by Superintendent A. Morrison. Hawera, who dealt fully with the damage caused and the precautions to be taken. ADVERTISERS’ ANNOUNCEMENTS. The official opening of the Park Tennis Club, Hawera, will be held to-mor-row, a yankee tourney commencing at 1.30 p.m. Visiting players are cordially invited.
