NEW PLYMOUTH Mrs. Youngs, who was a visitor at ‘/Marsland View” for several days, has returned to Wellington. Miss Cath. Fraser, who has been visiting Wellington and Hawera, returned to New Plymouth last night. Mrs. W. G. Stewart has returned from a holiday spent at Auckland. • Mrs. F. Farley, Whakatane, is the guest of Mrs. H. Stocker. Mrs. McLachlan is staying at New Plymouth with her mother, Mrs. G. H. McGahey, before leaving for Whangarei, where she will live. Mrs. L. M. Moss has returned from a holiday spent at Rotorua.
Miss Kath Andrew, Wellington, who has been the guest of Mrs. Russell Matthews, will leave on her return to-day. Mrs. J. S. Tingey, Feilding, is the guest of Mrs. D. Blackley. Mrs. W. J. Shanley, Wellington, is spending a holiday at New Plymouth as the guest of Mrs. lan Keith. Mrs. W. R. Shaw, Hawera, Mrs. H. Dey, Tariki, Mrs. R. Davis, Inglewood, and Mrs. H. Dey junr., were visitors to New Plymouth this week for the DeyRoebuck wedding. Mrs. J. A. Stevenson, Pihama, left on Wednesday morning on a motor tour to Hamilton and Helensville. HAWERA Miss K. Long, Manaia, who has been spending a few days With Miss M. Brown, returned home on Tuesday. Mrs. H. Jones, Mrs. G. S. Fry and Mrs. H. M. Caselberg were recent hostesses at tea. Mrs. Arthur Harrop has returned home after spending a week or two at Auckland. Miss Mary Thomson has returned from Wellington. Mrs. T. R. Overton has her sister, Mrs. Billing, Feilding, staying with her. Mrs. W. J. Broderick, Maxwell, Wanganui, paid a short visit to her sister, Mrs. W. M. Winks, during the week. Mrs- H. M. Besley is spending a short holiday at Hunterville, where she is the guest of her sister, Dr. Jessie Burnett. Play-Reading at Club. Large bowls of orange and gold Iceland poppies made a striking contrast with the green furnishings in the reception room at the Women’s Club on Monday night, and a massive jar of mauve and purple Spanish irises arranged with pink and jade ixias stood on the piano. It was an effective setting for the playreading circle’s last reading for 1935. As a fitting finale to the year’s assemblies they chose Gordon Daviot’s thirteenth century historical play “Richard of Bordeaux,” which, notwithstanding its cast of 31 characters, reads well. Miss I. M. Glenn read the stage directions. Among those present were the president, Mrs. W. A. O’Callaghan, wearing a gown of deep ruby chiffon velvet, Mesdames A. M. Young, C. G. Trotter, T. F. McKenzie, P. O. Veale, G. H. Mann, W. Hamilton, J. Houston, A. Evans, and Misses C. Reilly, W. Knight, W. Duckworth, D. Bryant, B. Ryan, M. Burgess, E. Caplen (all readers), Mesdames J. E. Campbell, G. Mcßeth (Wanganui), G. H. Ryan, R. R. Henderson, W. A. Duckworth, A. Thomson, E. Evans, W. R. Shaw, S. A. Chisholm, H. R. Kemp and Misses I. E. R. McLean, M. Crabbe, A. Carpenter, M. C. Power and A. Kemp. Eltham Presentation. Miss Helen Ryburn, who is leaving Eltham to take up nursing at Te Kuiti, was presented with a white xylonite toilet set from the young people of the Presbyterian Church at a surprise party on Wednesday. Miss Margaret Tarrant in making the presentation wished Miss Ryburn success. Miss M. Hilmer presented a bouquet. Competitions were won by Misses J. Peters and J. Glass. Musical items were given by Misses J. Peters, G. and E. Rankin, A. Slater and F. Coppiestone.
