TOUR OF MR. W. NASH

ADDRESS AT INGLEWOOD. Mr. Walter Nash, president of the Labour Party, addressed a meeting pt Inglewood last night on the lines of his speech at New Plymouth. There was af large attendance. ■ . i . Commenting on a report of his address at New Plymouth Mr. Nash said he’had been described as the deputy-leader of the party. That office was held by Mr. P. Fraser. The statement that the number of “railway employees had been reduced to 6000” should read that the number of men engaged on public works, mainly railway' construction, had been reduced in 1931' to 6000. The reference' to the Government guarantee to the Mortgage Corporation should read that /in oases where the corporation makes loans /"to farmers in, excess of two-thirds of the value • of the security the Government guarantees the interest and principal on the sum advanced in excess of twothirds and the reference to the NapierGisborne railway was to the section to Wairoa only. , Mr. Nash stated that reference to the qualities of margarine and butter was that the chairman of the margarine combine claimed that margarine was equal in nutritious value to sunshine butter. His personal opinion, based on/the study of medical experts and dietitians was I that margarine could never equal butter lin nutritious value—particularly the butter product from the ' grasses pf’New Zealand. ;/■ ' . / “I have never,” said Mr. Nash, “stated that- the Labour Party proposed to guarantee a price by loan when the price was below parity. The Labour Party proposes to pay the primary producer a price which will cover his costs and give him a reasonable income for his work. The procedure provides for a payment, and has no relation whatever to a loan.” I The actual meaning of his reference to rationed teachers was that‘in two months’ time 950 of them '/ould be doing ordinary teaching worki and that two months ago 800 were doing standard work, although they were receiving rationed pay, and that even the rationed pay was only made possible by a grant of £15,000 from the unemployment funds.
