SCHOOL COMMITTEE MEETING. CUP PRESENTED TO SCHOOL. The monthly meeting of the Inglewood school committee was held on Tuesday evening. Messrs. M. Sutherland (chairman), A. G. Jenkins (secretary), S. Lovell, E. Clarke and E. Maetzig were present. The committee expressed its appreciation of the work of the caretaker, Mrs. Davidson. The headmaster, Mr. C. W. Pearce, reported that the number of pupils admitted during the term was 20 while seven left. The number admitted during October was two and four left. The roll number at October 31 was 232 and the average attendance for October 211. The low average attendance had been caused by an outbreak of chickenpox, severe colds and inclement weather. A pane of glass was broken in a window in the cocoa shed and the window fasteners were also broken. The inside walls of the cocoa shed were badly disfigured by marks caused by a muddy football. Handling a football inside the shed had been stopped. It would be of great assistance to the staff if the land for proposed children’s gardens at the foot of the hill could be dug as soon as possible.

The headmaster reported that one evening some children above school age had been found playing cricket on the school grounds without permission. The chairman stated that the notice at the gate that trespassers would be prosecuted had been very effective in keeping trespassers out. Some of the committee were of the opinion that the notice should be taken down as it gave visitors the opinion that they were not allowed to inspect the grounds, which was wrong as inspection was cordially invited. Discussion took place on raising funds for the children’s Christmas tree and prizes for the infants. The headmaster stated that it was intended to hold a mart instead of the penny concerts previously held. The mart is to be held on November 30. It was mentioned that usually the committee held a mart but Mr Sutherland suggested that a queen carnival should be held in January. After discussion it was decided that with a vieiy to completing the basketball court a queen carnival be held in January. It was decided to write to the board pointing out the necessity of the frosting oi some of the school windows and suggesting that the colour be pale green. The committee expressed to the headmaster its appreciation of the work done by the staff in the planting of the drive. A handsome cup presented by Mi. AC. Nicholls, Frankton, an old boy of the school, was received with thanks. Mr. Sutherland said that shortly a cricket pitch would have to be laid down for the children and some members of the Inglewood Cricket Club who lived nea the school had offered to make a pitch and keep it in order if th ey J’ er ° , al ' lowed to use it as a practice pitch. After discussion it was agreed that ffie should be top-dressed and during the holidays closed for hay to give the young grass a chance to pick up. The condition of the school roadway was mentioned and the secretary statea that the contractor had informed him that it would be finished as soon as possible.
