HELP FOR MAORIS
INDEPENDENT CANDIDATE’S VIEW. ALARM FELT AT MORTALITY. By Telegraph—Press Association. Foxton, Nov. 6. Speaking at Fox ton last night Mr. J. K. Hornblow (Independent) referred to mortality among Maoris. In the Manawatu population of about 2000 the normal death-rate of about 25 per thousand had recently risen to an alarming extent. The causes were attributed to pneumonia as the result of bad housing conditions and attendance at tangis.. This matter required immediate attention. The Maori land, settlement and farming schemes, he said, would not improve unless under expert pakeha supervision. Had the pakeha co-operated with the Maori administration in times past gross mismanagement would have been avoided. He advocated immediate attention by the Government in these matters in the interest of the physical and social welfare of the Maori race.
