MAORIS IMPRISONED

COURT SENTENCES AT GISBORNE. JUDGE EXPERIENCES DIFFICULTY. By Telegraph—Press Association. Gisborne, Nov. 6. In the Supreme Court to-day Mr. Justice Smith sentenced Rawiri Grant, aged 49 years, to six months’ imprisonment on. each of two charges of carnal knowledge, the sentences to be concurrent. The judge commented that it" was difficult to deal satisfactorily in cases where the parties were Maoris and where there seemed to have been a grave lack of parental control. For breaking, entering and theft Rata Wahanui, aged 21, was sentenced to three years’ reformative detention, the judge remarking that a stringent sentence was necessary as-the prisoner since 1933 had embarked on a career of crime.
