POSTAL PACKET THEFT

OFFENCE AT TAUMARUNUI. CONVICTION OF YOUNG MAN. (By Telegraph—Special to Daily News.) Taumarunui, Last Night. Charged in the court this ntiorning with fraudulently retaining a postal packet, and with the theft of a postal packet, Robert Thomas Graves pleaded guilty to-day. He was convicted on the two charges and ordered to come up for sentence if called upon within 12 months and to return 10s removed from the packet. Sergeant Harley said Graves had been in the employ of the Mutual Life and Citizens’ Insurance Company. He had a post office letter box and after removing the packet had gone on a trip to Auckland. He opened the packet in the train and spent the money. He later admitted the offence. The magistrate said he would take into consideration the fact that the young man had not been in trouble before. The offence was a serious one and might place innocent postal officials in trouble.
