“NO, NO, NANETTE”

BOX PLAN OPENS TO-DAY. It is predicted that the presentation of the musical comedy “No, No, Nanette” by the New Plymouth Amateur Operatic Society, commencing on Monday night a four nights’ season at the New Plymouth Opera House, will eclipse all records. “No, No Nanette” unfolds an interesting story. The home of James Smith (John D. Quirk) is at New York. He makes millions printing Bibles and has a good, economical wife, Sue (Ruth Gentles), who puts her spare nickels into the money box. So Jimmy has to relieve his financial superabundancy by succouring deserving damsels who find this work-a-day world hard for persons of their delicate natures. Jimmy loves his wife, and if she would only spend his money he would be happy, though he cannot be happy unless she is happy too—and spending money does not appeal to her. Quite a different type is Billy Early’s wife, Lucille (Gwenyth Greenwood), who gets as much fun out of spending £lOOO as Sue does by saving one penny. Lucille explains to Sue that her policy is entirely wrong; the only way to keep a husband is to keep him poor. During the cheerful intrigues which constitute the main portion of the comedy Sue discovers that her economy will not save Jimmy from his favourite vice of circulating money, so rather than see him waste it on art careers for young women, or elaborate wardrobes, she appears in an expensive frock and announces a social programme for the future which will keep Jimmy poor for the rest of his days. Complications arise, and the comedy situations are extremely humorous. The charm of the story is the innocence of Jimmy’s friendships with girls from three other cities. The box plan opens at Collier’s Music House to-day.
