DEMOCRATS’ POLICY

MR. HISLOP SPEAKS AT TEMUKA. CRITICISM OF THE GOVERNMENT. By Telegraph—Press Association. Timaru, Last Night. Mr. T. C. A. Hislop, leader of the Democrat Party, addressed a wellattended meeting at Temuka to-night. He commented on the attendances at his meetings which, he said, signified that the political conscience of the people was awake and that they were determined to hear all there was to hear before making their judgment. Mr. Hislop said that for many years the destiny of the country had been guided by two parties, Liberal and Reform. Despite certain differences these parties had? principles common to both. They believed in the principles of democratic government and were opposed to State Socialism and State control. Now the parties in combination pretended to still uphold those same principles, but had in reality betrayed them, utterly and had succumbed to State Socialism. Mr. Hislop dealt with the exchange rate and expounded the party’s plan to help the farmer by a bounty on production equal to the nett advantage gained from the present exchange. He commented on the Veterans’ Bill and went on to say that the party was pledged to reduce taxation. Mr. Hislop was accorded a vote 'of thanks. / SELECTION OR DR. H. E. ANNETT.
