During a conference of State representatives which to-day discussed a plan for assisting the mining industry Senator McLachlan, Minister in charge of development, said that as the result of the financial assistance made available by the Commonwealth gold won this year in Australia would reach the value of £8,500,000, while additional employment had been given to 5567 men. Mr. McLachlan mentioned that there was still a shortage of skilled mining engineers and miners which was retarding the gold mining industry.
