QUALITY OF CHEESE
ANSWER TO MR. T. H. McCOMBS.
“REGRETTABLE IGNORANCE.”
By Telegraph—Press Association.
Dannevirke, Last Night.
At a meeting of dairy factory representatives at Dannevirke this morning opportunity was taken by Mr. A. Linton, middle ward representative on the Dairy Board, to reply to a statement recently made by Mr. T. H. McCombs, member for Lyttelton, concerning the quality of New Zealand cheese, which appeared, in the Hastings Tribune. “It is extraordinary that a gentleman who aspires to represent New Zealand in Parliament should make such irresponsible statements as that attributed to Mr. T. H. McCombs in the Tribune,” said Mr. Linton. “He is reported to have stated at a public meeting at Hastings that New Zealand cheese smelt like a manure heap. “These downright stupid and utterly unfounded statements coming from would-be politicians sometimes find their way into English' newspapers, and you can imagine- with what glee they are received by our competitors and what dismay they cause to our London advertising staff, who spend their lives telling the British people about the high quality of our product and the careful way in which it is produced. “Mr. McCombs shows regrettable ignorance of the subject about which he is talking, as most of the criticism in the past has been directed at openness and other technical defects. Our cheese is generally accepted as the most uniform and mildest of any cheese imported into Great Britain.”
