FEARS DISPELLED
SOUTH CANTERBURY FARMERS. THREE DAYS’ BENEFICIAL RAINS. By Telegraph—Press Association. Timaru, Last Night. The fears of farmers in South Canterbury that the prolonged dry spell would have disastrous consequences have been dispelled as the result of beneficial rain in the last three days. Till early in the week crops throughout the district appeared to be all right, but they were stunted in growth, and the general opinion of farmers was that a fall of two inches was necessary to enable them to face the summer with any degree of confidence. A change came on Wednesday and south-easterly weather has prevailed for three days. There have been occasional breaks, but generally light penetrating rain has prevailed. The countryside is looking much better already. Rain is still falling. The total fall this year so far is 15J inches, compared with 24J inches in the corresponding period last year.
