WINGS BADLY TORN
KINGSFORD SMITH'S AEROPLANE. DAMAGED BY SNOW AND ICE. Sir Charles Kingsford Smith, who was forced to abandon his flight to Australia at Brindisi, reached Croydon at 8 p.m. to-day. Sir Charles had telegraphed that ice formed on the wings, compelling him to return. The ice had damaged the edge of a wing, necessitating repairs at London. When he landed at Croydon officials stated that they had not seen a machine in worse condition and still flying. The leading and trailing edges of the wings were badly torn and the woodwork was affected as the result of hail and snow and ice formation. Sir Charles will take off again as soon as the plane is repaired.
