WENDY’S DRESSMAKERS

ROMPER FOR A ONE-YEAR-OLD. This week's special request comes from a girl who wants to make a playromper for her brother who is just one year old. You will need a piece of washing cotton one yard long and 16 inches wide for a romper to fit a child of this age. It would be well to cut a pattern in newspaper first and try it against the baby to see if the measurements are correct. If any alterations are needed, you can easily make them on the pattern before cutting the material. Diagram A gives th® necessary measurements. Cut down the back centrefold for five or six inches so that the romper can be drawn over the head, but be careful not to cut through the front fold.

Join the side seams, then bind the left side of the bqck-opening, the neck, and the other side of the opening, using gaily coloured cotton bias-binding. Bind the sleeve edges to match, then the two lower curved edges of the romper. Bind

the leg too, making casings of the binding here so that you can thread narrow elastic through. Secure the ends of the elastic when you have pulled it up to fit the baby’s legs, with firm stitches. Sew press-studs on the lower curved edges so that when the romper is on they can be closed to make the two legs. Sew three press-studs down the back opening for fastening there, and make a belt of two lengths of bias binding stitched together with the wrong sides facing. Diagram B‘ shows a cute little puppy which you can draw on to the front of the romper and embroider in simple stitches. Outline the figure with stemstitching, work the spots and collar in satin-stitch, and add black French knots for eyes and nose. Wendy’s Dressmaker.
