Y.W.Y.M.C.A. WEEK

POLITICAL ADDRESSES PLANNED. MAORI EVENING FOR LYCEUM. Vigorous preparation for a gymnastic display next Wednesday has occupied much time this week at the Y.W.Y.M.C.A. Community House at New Plymouth. Two major meetings were held, however, on Wednesday night. In view of the forthcoming Parliamentary elections the Business and Professional Women’s Round Table Club at its fortnightly meeting decided on the. recommendation of the Wellington Club to promote a series of lectures by the five New Plymouth candidates in order to give women an understanding of the various platforms. The addresses will be given weekly at a club tea, the first speaker being the Rev. F. L. Frost next Wednesday. At the Round Table meeting Miss M. Greenwell, general secretary, presided. An address on the advantages and disadvantages of film censorship was given by Mrs. M. M. Arthur. Correspondence received included a letter from the Dominion president, Dr. Chapman, who is at Geneva and who gave an account of some personalities she had met. Advice was received from headquarters that new Dominion badges were available and 25 were ordered.

A distinctly native atmosphere prevailed at the monthly assembly of the Business Girls’ Lyceum, at which Miss M. Barlow presided and members of the Maori lore circle were- hostesses. No seats were seen in the hall, which was hung with mats, baskets, gourds and meres. Tattooed and in full native dress, circle members, led by Miss J. Main, gave a chant of welcome. Items, mainly impromptu, followed and included pol dances, Maori songs and hakas, A more serious note was provided by the explanation by members of the meanings of various place names at and about New Plymouth. Miss I. Jaspar, convener, thanked Mr. F. Therkleson, for the assistance and instruction he had given the circle throughout the season. Supper and the singing of a well-known Maori song concluded the entertainment.
