ELTHAM MILITARY WORK
PROGRESS MADE BY PLATOON. Instruction in anti-aircraft work was given the Eltham platoon of Ist Battalion Taranaki Regiment by WarrantOfficer J. L. 0. Rowe on Wednesday, w’hen keen interest was taken by the boys under Lieutenants E. Morton and M. S. Carrie. The efficiency cup for the beat turnedout man on parade was awarded to Private D. Crozier. Five new members were sworn in, the roll being 26, which is only three short of full strength. The following promotions were announced: Corporal F. Hopkins to be lance-sergeant, Lance-Corporal J. Ward to be corporal, Private F. H. Bolwell to ■be corporal, and Privates J. W. Williams, J. L. Pennington, H. E. Taylor and V. Towers to be lance-corporals. GENERAL ITEMS. Eltham Temperance Work. Temperance work among the Maoris was the subject of a talk by Mrs. Williams, Hawera, at a special meeting of the Eltham .W.C.T.U. A collection was taken up for the work. Two members were enrolled. The meeting was held at the home of Mrs. W. J. Williams, there being a good attendance. Victory Ball Success.
A statement presented to the management committee of the Stratford Rugby Club on Wednesday showed that a good profit was realised from the victory ball held to mark the senior team’s winning of the Taranaki championship. Appreciation of the services of voluntary helpers including the secretary of the social committee, Mr. H. Woollett, and of Mr. and Mrs R. Wood for their hospitality was expressed. It was reported that the club had had a successful season, both financially and on the field.
