SCHOOL STEEPLECHASE

NEW PLYMOUTH EVENT A. H. RYAN WINS SENIOR RACE. C. G. TAYLOR IN THE INTERMEDIATE G. DAVIDSON JUNIOR WINNER. Finishing with a fine turn of speed when challenged by his brother 150 yards from the finishing tape, A. H. Ryan went on to win the New Plymouth Boys High School senior steeplechase at the golf links at Waiwakaiho yesterday from scratch. C. G. Taylor won the intermediate race off the 60s mark and G. Davidson (60s) won the junior event. The three races were keenly contested, the intermediate event particularly producing a fine finish. The three events attracted an entry of 356 runners. The fine organisation which has always characterised these events was again in evidence, an alteration In the method ’of taking the times enabling the whole list of results, placings and fastest time results to be available within five minutes of the finish of the race. In past years this work has occupied at least two hours after the face. ■The race was run in three divisions, senior (over 16), intermediate (under 16) and junior (under 14). The course for the senior event was three and a-half miles. It ran almost direct to the sandhills, through the lupins and on to the beach, which provided heavy going. After a three-quarter mile run in sand the track came around the flagstaff and back along the front of the sandhills almost to the spot at which it entered the lupins. Then doubling back it passed behind the redoubt at the head of the Rewa Rewa rifle range, passed through the Dell and, turning sharply, finished in a straight below the club-house. The finishing post Was just below the eighteenth green. ' The course for the intermediate runners was the same until the flagstaff was reached, whence it went straight to the redoubt without doubling back and so cutting off about half a mile. The junior course did not go into the sandhills, turning along the front of them to the redoubt and home the same way as the others. The distance was one and a half miles.

DAVIDSON’S COMFORTABLE WIN. Sixty-two runners faced the starter in the junior race. The limit men set a smart pace at the outset and it was not until three-quarters of the course had been covered that the back markers managed to get up among the. leaders. Davidson was well in front when he turned into the home straight and won more or less comfortably although Wey ' made up a lot of ground over the last 400 yards. Jonds was 20 yards further back. N. Caiman, who came in seventh, was the first scratch man in and won the cup for fastest time. Details are:— G. Davidson (60s), 11m Is ..... 1 R. G. Wey (50s), 11m 8s 2 E. Jones (70s), 11m 35s >. 3 J. Taylor, finishing strongly, won the intermediate race by four yards when challenged strongly by S. L. Kettle and A. Adlam, the last two being separated by a foot for second and third respectively. The runners were always well strung out in this race, although the leaders did not at any stage command a great lead. C. R. Adams, who off the 40s mark secured fourth place, won the Easton Memorial Cup for fastest time, Taylor and Cliff being second equal, after taking a second longer than Adams. The first scratch man in was L. J. Beal, who was thirty-first.

Ryan took command 500 yards from home and was first man in in the senior race to win the 1911 challenge cup and the Brice Cup for fastest time. The field was strung out over a considerable distance and coming down towards the Dell Moss led by 20 yards from Hamerton, and L. T. Ryan, A. H. Ryan running easily in eighth position. The Ryan brothers improved their positions and just after turning into the straight A. H. Ryan went to the front. L. T. Ryan
