LET US HELP OURSELVES.

Not long ago the Tourist Department announced that five cruise ships would shortly be visiting New Zealand, bringing for the most part Australian tourists, and that parties from each of these ships would visit Taranaki and Mount Egmont. Nor is this the only practical gesture bn the part of the department that it is genuinely desirous of bringing tourists to this province. Two new publicity booklets have just come from the Government press. One is the summary of detailed itineraries and choices of itineraries that will be distributed to all passengers on the cruise ships visiting New Zealand in the near future. On turning the cover one is greeted on the frontispiece with a beautiful full-page photograph of Mount Egmont reflected in the waters of Lake Mangamahoe, and entitled, “A Famous Trans-Tasman Beacon for Airmen—Majestic Egmont, 8260 ft.” The other booklet is a programme of independent travel and escorted tours entitled, “New Zealand—Scenic Playground of the Pacific,” and the cover design is an arresting picture of Mount Egmont from Pukekura Park, in sepia tones. Letterpress in both booklets gives further details of the scenic attractions of the province. So far the department. Is Taranaki so lethargic in this matter that while being very willing to criticise the department it is unwilling to help itself? Surely the prospective visits to Taranaki of parties of Australian visitors provide opportunities that should not be neglected. Moreover, if the province shows it is giving practical cooperation in making tourists pleased with what they see, would it not encourage the department to give even further assistance to the province, say, by helping to improve the hostel accommodation and facilities on Mount Egmont? Certain it is that if we are not enterprising enough to help ourselves more in this matter we cannot reasonably complain if we remain a tourist backwater.
