MR. SIMPSON’S CAMPAIGN
ADDRESS GIVEN. AT OHANGAI. Mr. W. G. Simpson, Labour candidate for tire Patea electorate, addressed a well-attended meeting of electors at Ohangai on Monday night, Mr. J. Kerrisk being in the chair. The speaker outlined the main points of the Labour Party’s policy, following the general form of addresses previously reported. In reply to a question on the guaranteed prices proposal by the chairman, Mr. Simpson said any surplus credit over and above the guaranteed price would automatically become the property of the Reserve Bank and would serve to create a reserve fund to augment lower returns in other years. Replying to another question he said an endeavour would be made to reduce progressively the National Debt, together with a scaling , down of interest charges on this debt. Further borrowing would definitely be eliminated. A lively discussion took place between the speaker and Mr. J. Robertson, during which the Government’s exchange policy' and Labour’s guaranteed prices and wages plan came under fire. At the conclusion of the discussion Mr. J- E. O’Shea n oved a vote of thanks to Mr. Simpson and confidence in the Labour Party, this being carried by acclamation. A vote of thanks to the chair concluded the meeting.
