Two thousand coal miners at various Welsh pits are employing the “stay down” tactics started at Nine Mile Point, and 8000 surface workers have struck in sympathy. Fearing a general coal strike in South Wales involving 150,000 miners, the Department of Labour has offered to arbitrate.
A strong police guard has been provided to protect non-unionists, whose trains have been stoned. A heavy boulder dropped from a bridge and crashed through an empty carriage.
