GENERAL OFFENSIVE

ATTACK ORDERED BY EMPEROR TROOPS RUSHED TOWARD OGADEN LITTLE HOPE OF PEACE IN ITALY ORDERS to begin a general offensive against the Italians on the southern front have been issued to the Abyssinian armies by the Emperor Haile Selassie, and more troops are being rushed into the Ogaden district. Italian aeroplanes continue to bomb Abyssinian posts, with devastating effect. In the north the Italian commander has formally taken possession of Adowa in the name of Italy. Suggestions for peace negotiations made in France and Britain have apparently evoked little sympathy in Italy, where it is reported public opinion has been firmly convinced that the present position is not due to conflict between Italy and the League but to Britain’s fear that Fascist Italy, in possession of Abyssinia, could sever Britain’s communication with the East.
