VIEW OF AUCKLAND CORONER.
By Telegraph—Press Association.
Auckland, Last Night. “This is the second case of its kind I have dealt with in two weeks. Many young lives are thrown away every year; lives that could be saved if motor-cyclists were only provided with crash helmets. This comment was made by Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., coroner, at the inquest into the death of James Lewis Calwell, aged 23, a single man, a Defence Department instructor, who suffered fatal head injuries when the motor-cycle he was riding became out of control in Ponsonby. After evidence had been given indicating that Calwell struck a telegraph pole the coroner returned a verdict that death was due to injuries received when his machine became out of control. “Motor-cyclists’ hands are both engaged in controlling the ‘machine,” the coroner remarked, reiterating the need for helmets. *
