NEW POST OFFICE SITE.
The reported transaction likely to lead to the erection at a later date of a new post office in a central position in New Plymouth will doubtless be received with gratification by the business people of New Plymouth who have been agitating for it, especially those in the eastern portion of the business area who have for a long time felt that the town has been steadily growing away from its post office. From this point of view the site reported to be the one involved is certainly most centrally situated and has the added advantage of being adjacent to what the borough council proposes shall become almost a central "square.” The junction of Gill and St. Aubyn Streets in this vicinity will under the council’s scheme become a large area, and no doubt will be the point of arrival and departure of transport buses. As such its close proximity, to the post office would have obvious advantages. The site of the present post office has become more or less a “dead end,” largely owing to the adjacent Roman Catholic block, which has prevented the expansion of business premises in that direction, and this factor has doubtless been taken into consideration by the authorities. Tire purchase of a site does not necessarily mean, of course, that a new building will be commenced in the near future. The department would have plans to prepare and a great deal of reorganisation to consider before a building is put in hand. There is also the question of an automatic telephone exchange to be taken into consideration. Possibly the customhouse will figure in any rearrangement made, for the present building is a disgrace. On the whole the Government buildings at New Plymouth are not a credit to the town, and. a step such as the one reported is one in the right direction.
