Financing New Zealand’s Overseas Trade The trading banks of New Zealand provide the financial machinery for almost the whole of New Zealand’s export and import trade. For goods valued at 100 British pounds a Bank pays the New Zealand producer 124 New Zealand pounds. The British pounds received by the Bank are available for sale to importers who require them to pay for imports from Britain. The New Zealand importer pays 1244 New Zealand pounds for 100 British i pounds. Thus, on a telegraphic transfer basis, the Bank’s gross profit on the buying and selling transaction is 10/- in New Zealand currency, against which must be charged salaries and office expenses. This is one of the many services rendered to producers, merchants and the community generally by the New Zealand trading banks. —lnserted by the Associated Banks of J\'cw Zealand. 8
