TIDAL WAVE
CANADIAN POLLS ROUT OF GOVERNMENT GREAT LIBERAL VICTORY CLEAR HOUSE MAJORITY SOCIAL CREDIT'S RECORD By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Rec. 10.45 p.m. Toronto, Oct. 15. The biggest House of Commons .majority in the history of Canadian politics was accorded the Liberals, led by Mr. W. L. Mackenzie King, on Monday by a tidal wave of anti-Administration votes which started on the Atlantic seaboard
and ended on the Pacific coast, wiping out Mr. R. B. Bennett's Conservative Government majority. The state of the parties at 2.15 a.m. was:— Liberals Conservatives 40 Social Credit W Co-operative Commonwealth ... 6 Independent Liberal 4 Labour 2 Reconstruction 1 Independent 4 United Farmers of Ontario .... 1 Total completed returns 233 Total seats in House 245 All four national leaders were elected with the return of Mr. J. S. Woodworth, Co-operative Commonwealth leader, for the Winnipeg North electorate. Mr. Mackenzie King was re-elected for Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, Mr. Bennett was re-elected for Calgary West and Mr. H. H. Stevens was re-elected for Kootenay East. It is the first time in the history of the British Empire that the Douglas
Social Credit Party has been represented in Parliament. The party made a big dent in the western anti-Govem-ment representation, particularly in Alberta, where 11 of its candidates were elected of a total of 17 members and where it leads in four doubtful seats. Social Credit nominees swept the rural ridings of the four urban constituencies. Two were elected in Saskatchewan. Neither the Reconstruction Party under Mr. Stevens nor the Co-operative Commonwealth Party had a member elected east of the Great Lakes. Conservatives were elected in five constituencies of British Columbia, the only province where they led the other parties.
